Transforming an outdoor rest area with recycled rubber chipping
The brief
We were asked by property developer to provide a flooring solution to one of their latest projects in Chester. They had a large outside rest area for workers during breaks etc. The issue was that is was a bit of a boggy mess! We carried out a survey and suggested our 20mm recycled rubber chipping bound together.. All they had to do was to level the area and apply a retainer around the perimeter – we would do the rest.
The product
Our 20mm rubber chipping is made from recycling used vehicle tyres. This is done by a series of specially engineered recycling machines that granulate the tyres into different sizes. They then pass through a separating line that removes the wire and smaller chippings.
The resultant chips for this project were 8–20 mm in size, and were then polyurethane sealed and coloured.
The result
The end result looks really good and was well received by all who use the area.
The beauty of this product lies in the simplicity to lay as it can be poured directly over most surfaces including concrete, tarmac, and even compacted soil (with a suitable weed membrane in place).
This resulted in a cost effective and durable safer surface for the outdoor rest area. The end result is a pleasant area to walk on that will last for many years to come, without any need for maintenance except the occasional clean with warm soapy water. Our client was delighted with the area and was particularly impressed with how quick and simple it was to lay.
